Virginia Beach, Va. - On a wet Saturday evening, The Catholic University of America women's soccer team dropped to a 1-1 season record after falling to Christopher Newport University, 6-1.
In the 34th minute, trailing 2-0, sophomore Elizabeth Johnson put the Cardinals on the board with her third goal of the season. Johnson's score came after fellow sophomore Mackenzie Earley sent a long ball to senior Andrea Jablonskyj. Jablonskjy registered her second assist of the season as she used her head to flick the pass to Johnson's feet, who placed it between the pipes.
Heavy rains continued to fall in the second half while the Captains capitalized on three quick opportunities, including two penalty kicks, to advance their lead to 5-1 by the 47:20 mark. They notched their final goal of the day in the 58th minute, creating a five-goal advantage.
The Cardinals put up a fight and racked up 17 shots in the match with rookie Krista Boretti and Johnson each taking four while senior Riley Hawblitzel took two. Senior goalkeeper Christina Peyroux tallied six saves.
Catholic returns to the nation's capital to host the D.C. Classic on Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10. The Cardinals will face the Quakers of Guildford College on Saturday at 2:30 and the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets on Sunday.
