Jablonskyj Scores in 108th Minute to Lift Cards Over Blue Jays

Elizabethtown, Pa. -  With under three minutes remaining in double overtime senior Andrea Jablonskyj fired a direct kick from 25 yards out, over the wall into the upper left corner to lift The Catholic University of America women’s soccer team over Elizabethtown College, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, the Cardinals move to 7-5 overall in 2017 while capturing their first Landmark Conference win of the year. They handed the Blue Jays their second league loss (1-2) as Etown moves to 6-4-1 overall.

Catholic junior Jillian Sudo put the Cardinals on the scoreboard early when she trapped a cross from sophomore Bella Bertoncini and fired it into the left side of the net for a 1-0 advantage in the 17th minute.

The Cardinals held off the Blue Jays through the half and took a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute. Playing high in the box, freshman Bridget Buckley turned a chip from sophomore Grace Boras into Catholic’s second goal of the day.

Itching for a Landmark victory, Elizabethtown went on a scoring spree capturing three goals in less than six minutes. Sophomore Lydia Lawson, struck back-to-back in the 55th and 58th minute before junior Sophie McKnight scored in the 61st.

Trailing 3-2, Catholic remained dominant over the next 28 minutes. With just one minute to play Buckley forced the Blue Jays to extra time when she headed a cross from sophomore Elizabeth Johnson inside the right post.

In the high energy Landmark contest, the Cardinals took 28 shots while the Blue Jay took 27. Johnson tallied six total shots on the day and senior Alexa Povelaitis took four. Senior goalkeeper Ally Marcello earned her third win of the year with a season-high eight saves.

Catholic returns to the nation’s capital to host conference opponent Goucher College on Wednesday, October 11. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
