MADISON, N.J. - A 78th minute game-winning goal from junior Bella Bertoncini gave the Catholic University women's soccer team its first Landmark Conference win over the Drew Rangers, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals (5-3-2) got on the board first thanks to another long distance goal from sophomore Maggie Moorcones in the 41st minute. Her long distance effort sailed over the goalkeeper's head to put Catholic up 1-0 heading into halftime.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nina Fernandez made a big save to keep the game scoreless before Moorcones' strike. She made one of her eight saves in the match with a full extension dive to her right to stop the shot.
Drew (5-3-2) equalized in the 73rd minute to tie the game late in the second half.
The Cardinals made the most of a corner kick in the 78th minute to get a crucial second goal. Moorcones' cross found the Bertoncini at the back post, and Bertoncini finished to put Catholic up 2-1.
Catholic came out on top in a tightly-contested Landmark battle. The Rangers had the edge in shots, 19-17, while the Cardinals took more corner kicks, 6-4.
The Cardinals' next home match is Wednesday, October 3 at 7 p.m. against Frostburg State.
