TOWSON, Md. - The Catholic University women's soccer team has been picked to finish third in the 2019 Landmark Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.
The Cardinals received 42 total points for third place, trailing Susquehanna, who received 60 points and two first-place votes, and Scranton, the top team that earned 68 points and six first-place votes. Head coach JP Sousa returns all 11 starters from last year's squad that made it to the Landmark Semifinal game.
Catholic begins its quest for another Landmark championship Friday, August 30, in an away match against York College at 7 p.m.
The team competes in the DC Classic tournament in the second weekend of the season. The Cardinals take on Penn St. Harrisburg (9/7) and Randolph Macon College (9/8) in the tournament.
Landmark Conference competition begins on the road for the Cardinals as they take on Scranton on Saturday, September 28 at 4 p.m. The Royals went undefeated in Landmark games last season, finishing the year with a 16-2-3 record and at No. 4 in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region. In their last regular season match of the season, the Cards travel to Elizabethtown on Saturday, November 2 at 4 p.m.
The semifinals of the 2019 Landmark Conference Women's Soccer Championship will be played on Wednesday, November 6 with the championship game on Saturday, November 9.
After graduating no seniors from last year's squad, Catholic returns all of its main contributors from the 2018 team that went 10-5-3. Among the returnees are four All-Landmark Conference selections, seniors Mackenzie Earley, Grace Boras, and Elizabeth Johnson as well as junior Maggie Moorcones. Earley will serve as the mainstay on the Cardinals' backline of after starting in 17 games for Catholic as a central defender a year ago, helping the team post a goals against average of 1.00. Boras, Johnson, and Moorcones will look to lead the goal-scoring efforts once again after combining for 20 tallies last season.
Junior goalkeeper Nina Fernandez returns in goal after making 17 starts a year ago, and Daniella Montesano, Reagan Sharkey, Taylor DeMello, Halle Green, and Sarah Brush all return as Catholic's main midfield and defensive contributors. Sousa welcomes three newcomers to the 2019 roster as well.
