WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University women's soccer team moved to 3-0 on the season with a 1-0 victory over Penn St. Harrisburg on Saturday afternoon to open the D.C. Classic. The Cardinals peppered the opposing goalkeeper with 30 total shots, but it only took one goal from junior forward Bridget Buckley to get the win.
Catholic (3-0) took control of the contest early on, taking 11 shots and five corner kicks in the first half. Defender Daniella Montesano came the closest with a long-distance effort that was just tipped off the crossbar in the 21st minute.
Lions' goalie Hannah Williams dealt with several long-range attempts from the hosts. Thirteen different Cardinals registered shots in the match.
The deadlock remained, however, into the later stages of the opening forty-five minutes. The Catholic defense made a key team save off a corner kick to clear the ball off the line in the 23rd minute, and then junior goalkeeper Nina Fernandez made an impressive save sprawling out to her right to stop a good chance on goal in the 30th minute.
No chances were converted and the first half ended scoreless. It did not take long for the Cardinals to take the lead after the intermission.
An impressive team sequence of passing got senior forward Elizabeth Johnson the ball in the Lions' half of the pitch. Johnson found Buckley at the top of the penalty box and the junior forward turned to shoot a hard shot into the left corner past the keeper in the 48th minute.
Buckley's first goal of the season put Catholic up 1-0, but the barrage of shots did not stop there. The hosts outshot Penn St. Harrisburg 19-1 in the second half. Maggie Moorcones led the team with five shots, Johnson followed with four, and then Sarah Brush added three of her own.
Sophomore Makinsey Jarboe became the second Cardinal to strike the crossbar in the match when her shot was parried just enough off the bar in the 75th minute.
Fernandez earned her first clean sheet of the season in the 1-0 victory. Her lone save in the 30th minute preserved the shutout.
Catholic takes on Randolph-Macon tomorrow to wrap up the D.C. Classic. The Yellow Jackets topped Rutgers-Newark 4-1 in their contest this afternoon. The Sunday kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Carlini Field.
