Women's Soccer Loses First Game to Randolph Macon

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University women's soccer team was defeated for the first time this season on Sunday afternoon in a 2-0 defeat to Randolph Macon in the final game of the D.C. Classic tournament at Carlini Field.

The Cardinals (3-1) managed just two shots on goal in the contest against the Yellow Jackets, who have started their season 5-0 for the first time since 1995.

Randolph Macon's Gabby Nelson pounced on a loose ball after a corner kick to score her fifth goal in five games to put the visitors up 1-0 in the 24th minute. The Yellow Jackets doubled the Cardinals in shots 20-10.

Junior midfielder Krista Boretti led the offense with four shots, including one long-range effort that was just tipped over the bar in the 74th minute.

The Cardinals outshot Randolph Macon 8-6 in the second half but could not find a way back into the game. Nelson assisted a second goal in the 52nd minute to put the Yellow Jackets up 2-0.

Junior goalkeeper Nina Fernandez stayed busy between the posts for the Cardinals, making a season high ten saves.

Three Cardinals represented this year's All-Tournament Team. Junior forward Bridget Buckley was honored after her gamewinner against Penn St. Harrisburg on Saturday, and defenders Taylor Porcello and Reagan Sharkey made the cut after strong efforts on the Catholic backline, including 90-minute performances in Sunday's contest.

The Cardinals' next match comes Wednesday, September 11 at home against Stevenson. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
