WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University women's soccer team picked up its third consecutive win in a 1-0 victory over Landmark foe Goucher Wednesday night at Carlini Field.
The Cardinals (7-5-2, 3-1 LC) took the lead early and controlled the match throughout to pick up its third conference win of the season.
Catholic got on the board early from a Goucher own goal off a corner kick. Junior Maggie Moorcones' cross into the box was deflected right into the net off a Gopher defender to put the hosts up 1-0 in the 7th minute.
The Cards outshot their opponents 24-9 and only allowed one Goucher corner kick in the match, while taking eight of their own.
Catholic controlled a great majority of possession and threatened multiple times in the second half to extend the lead with another goal. Freshman forward Elizabeth Gorman came the closest with a pair of attempts that hit the post and stayed out.
Gorman's first effort was a lofted shot from a tough angle that glanced off the post in the 52nd minute, but then she hit a rocket from distance in the 61st minute that banged off the top of the left post, keeping the score 1-0.
The forward from Sewickley, Pa. led with six shots while midfielder Halle Green followed with four shots of her own. After a flurry of 15 shots and six corner kicks in the second half, the 1-0 lead proved to be enough for another conference win.
Junior goalkeeper Nina Fernandez picked up her fifth shutout of the season in the win, making three saves in the process. The Cardinals' backline consisting of Reagan Sharkey, Mackenzie Earley, and Taylor Porcello did not let Goucher get much going at all offensively.
Catholic continues with Landmark play this weekend in a road contest against Juniata. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
