Cardinals Tie Eagles in CAC Finale
CUA out shoots Mary Washington but can't come up with a score

WASHINGTON - In their final regular season game of 2006 the Catholic University Cardinals (10-6-1, 5-1-1 CAC) played the strong defense they had all season.  Unfortunately the other tendency the team didn't deviate from was its lack of scoring.  Against the Mary Washington Eagles (5-9-2, 2-2-1 CAC) CUA controlled the ball but couldn't find the back of the net resulting in a 0-0 tie after two overtimes.

The Cardinals overpowered the Eagles in the first half out shooting them 7-1 and dominating the time of possession.  In the second half, the Eagles came clawing back resulting in a 7-5 shot ratio and no CUA goals.

With the game getting physical the teams began the first ten-minute sudden death overtime.  CUA took two shots and allowed Mary Washington none but still couldn't connect.  On the final play of the first OT the Cards had a perfect corner kick opportunity but the ball rolled wide left to send it into a second.

The  second overtime was even more chaotic as UMW went on the offensive more than once.  Keeper Kim Stengle (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) made some big saves but the CUA offense couldn't score ending in the 0-0 tie.

The final totals had the Cards out shooting the Eagles 18-6 and taking eight corner kicks to UWM's six.  Stengle had four saves, two in overtime, while Lauren McCarthy notched eight.

The Cardinals will host a first round CAC match-up on Saturday at noon against the winner of the Gallaudet/Goucher game on Thursday.
