Women's Soccer Topples Elms College

Three freshmen combine for four goals in the 7-1 victory

SALEM, Va.- In the consolation match of the Roanoke College Showcase, Catholic University women's soccer proved that its impressive 2005 season was not a fluke.  The team scored seven goals dispersed amongst five players showing its balanced attack up front.  Senior goalkeeper Kim Stengle (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge), whose solid performance was critacal against Rochester on Saturday, and freshman Diana Spadaro (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) were both named to the all-tournament team.

The scoring barrage began at 17:21 when junior Sara Cooke (San Diego, Calif./Our Lady of Peace) accepted a pass from Suzie Peters (Nanuet, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) to make the score 1-0.  Soon after, Peters found another open Cardinal from her forward position and got the ball to Alix McDonald (Vero Beach, Fla./St. Edward's) making it 2-0.

Freshman sisters Michelle (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) and Diana Spadaro scored goals three and four with Diana Napolitano (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Immaculate Heart) notching the assist on the fourth.  McDonald scored her second goal of the afternoon right before the end of halftime making the score 5-0 going into the locker rooms.

The second half was a continuation of the Cardinal attack as freshman Kelly Andersen (Dover, Del./St. Thomas More) ricocheted in a ball from Cooke in the first 12 seconds.  CUA scored its final goal of the afternoon in the 81st minute when Katelynn Chambers (Montclaire, N.J./Montclair) connected with Diana Spadaro for the second goal of her CUA career.

Elms finally got on the board with just two minutes remaining on a score by Serina Percoski making the final 7-1.

CUA finished with 18 shots and four corner kicks to Elms' five and two.  Kate Milazzo (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) had two saves and Tere Rossi (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) had one in goal for the Cardinals, while Elms came up with nine total.

CUA now has a week to gear up for its play next Saturday and Sunday at the Oneonta Mayor's Cup against SUNY-Oneonta and Hartwick.
