Nicoletti Nets Cardinal Victory
CUA will travel to Moravian for Landmark semifinals
SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Helene Nicoletti's (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) goal in the 70th minute was just what the Catholic University women's soccer team need in its 1-0 win over the Susquehanna Crusaders (6-10-1) Saturday afternoon. With the win the Cards improve to 10-2-4 for the season and 3-1-2 in the Landmark Conference. The victory also gave them the third seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
The teams played each other evenly in the first half with both getting off four shots but neither able to find the back of the net. In the 70th minute Nicoletti finally broke the deadlock sailing it past keeper Meredith Tompeck off of a corner kick. Classmate Diana Spadaro (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) was awarded the assist, taking the corner for the Cards. Susquehanna fought back but it was too little too late as CUA went on to win 1-0 after 90 minutes of play.
Tere Rossi (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) was awarded the win in goal for the Cardinals with two saves and Tompeck took the loss with a total of nine stops. CUA outshot the Crusaders 13-8 and took just one extra corner kick (2-1), but it proved to be that one that made the difference.
The Cardinals will travel to Moravian College on Wednesday for the semifinal match-up between the second-seeded Greyhounds.
