Four CUA players earn all-tournament honors

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University women's soccer squad (3-1) defeated the Roanoke College Maroons (4-1) Sunday afternoon in the championship game of CUA's bi-annual DC Classic.  The Cardinal women beat the Maroons 6-3 and also had four players named to the all-tournament squad including Kelly Donnelly (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), Suzie Peters (Nanuet, N.Y./Albertus Magnus), Katelynn Chambers (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) and Diana Spadaro (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus).

Peters started the scoring early with a header sailing into the goal on a long cross from Spadaro to make it 1-0.  Roanoke quickly answered off of a free kick to knot it at one.  At 15:14 Elyse Bellardini (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) found the back of the net when the ball went off of a defender's foot right to hers.  Then just 14 second later Peters had her second goal of the day after forcing the keeper out of the box and sliding it paster her.  Roanoke struck back with just second to go in the half off of a corner kick to make it 3-2 at the break.

Donnelly started the second half out right hustling down the middle of the field past her defender and receiving the ball right outside the box.  She made one move to get by keeper Erin Hanson and recorded her first goal of the day.  Spadaro then got into the act putting one away off of a sailing cross from her sister Michelle (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus), this was the second sister to sister connection of the weekend for the pair.  Roanoke scored off of another free kick late in the half but with just minutes remaining Donnelly sealed the 6-3 victory with a goal off of her own shot.

CUA dominated offensively outshooting Roanoke 21-11 however the Maroons did hold a 4-2 corner kick advantage.  CUA keeper Tere Rossi (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) got the win with three saves while Hanson took the loss but notched six saves for Roanoke.

The Cards will have a break before they play Cabrini on Saturday.  The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., at Cardinal Stadium.  It is one of the many events for CUA's Women's Sports Week which celebrates women's athletics with all home events featuring the female Cards from Sep. 9-15.
