Cardinals suffer 3-0 setback at Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, MD. – It was another tough day offensively for the CUA women’s soccer team on Wednesday as the Cardinals fell to Stevenson 3-0 on the road.  The Mustangs scored two first half goals and added a second after halftime as they send CUA to its third straight defeat.

Once again, CUA had its chances on the offensive end as it totaled 13 shots for the match, but the Cardinals were unable to capitalize.  Stevenson was credited with 15 shots on the day and the Mustangs were also awarded three corner kicks to CUA’s one.

In goal for the Cardinals, Amanda Cowan sent back five shots, while Mustangs’ goalkeeper Lauren Weitzman stopped two shots.

The Cardinals came out firing as Regina Zolbrod got off an attempt from inside the box just 13 seconds in, but Weitzman came up with her first save.  Stevenson took the next three shots, but CUA responded with three more of its own, two of which went wide.

The Mustangs struck first when Samantha Novy found Heather Redding on a nice pass inside the box and Redding scored at the 25:19 mark to make it 1-0.  Eight minutes later, Stevenson went up by two when Shannon McGuire controlled the ball from around 25 yards out and fired a shot into the back of the net.

CUA was able to get only one more shot off in the half, and the teams retired for halftime with the score 2-0.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Cardinals’ Mary McGann took the first shot, but her attempt went high and the score remained 2-0.  A Caitlin Brett attempt two minutes later sailed wide, but CUA continued to try and cut into the Mustangs lead.

Carolyn Girandola had a look from the top of the box with 62:48 gone by, but her shot went high.  Less than four minutes later McGann got off another shot, but Weitzman made the save.

Redding made it a three-goal difference for Stevenson with her score at the 74:04 mark, which came on a shot from the top of the box off a feed from Novy.

CUA’s last shot attempt came with under 12 to play, from Lauren Cadott, but it was high and time eventually ran out on the Cardinals.

CUA will return to action on Saturday, September 25 when the Cardinals open up their 2010 Landmark Conference schedule at home on Alumnae Day.  CUA will host Susquehanna with the match slated to begin at 3:00.
