Cardinals Earn Fifth Meet Victory Over Shorewomen

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - After a decent break from competitive swimming and a training trip in Florida, the Catholic University women's swimming & diving team began 2019 on a strong note, defeating Washington College on Saturday afternoon, 146-116.

Sophomore Caroline Beal led the effort for the Cardinals in their first competitive meet since December 1 in the Yellow Jacket Invitational. She notched four event wins to help Catholic pick up the non-conference win over the Shorewomen.

Beal anchored the effort in the first event of the meet, the 200-medley relay. Megan Leibfreid (29.37), Molly Donnellan (34.45), Angela Castano (27.48), and Beal (26.46) combined for a first place finish to kick off the afternoon.

The sophomore from Newtown, Conn was again involved in Catholic's next event victory, the 100-backstroke. Beal (1:03.76), Kelly Smith (1:04.92), and Emily Earley (1:06.32) took the top three spots to sweep, earning 16 points.

Freshman Cagney Boyle followed with a first place finish of her own with a 1:13.04 time in the 100-backstroke. Senior Rachael Zarlinski (26.46) then took the top spot in the tightly-contested 50-freestyle sprint, with Leibfried touching a tenth of a second later for a third place finish at 26.58.

Kate Von Heeringen (57.26) and Kathryn Degnan (58.32) went one-two in the 100-freestyle for another 13 points for the Cardinals. Beal followed with her third event win in the 200-backstroke with a 2:18.12, with Boyle touching soon after for a second place 2:19.35. Boyle continued her impressive afternoon with the top spot in the 200-individual medley with a 2:18.63.

In the final women's event of the meet, the Cardinals took first in the 200-freestyle relay. Beal, Castano, Leibfreid, and Zarlinski teamed up for a 1:45.25 time to edge the Washington College second place finishers. Julia Labich, Kassi Grumski, Von Heeringen, and Donnellan (1:47.43) took third in the event.

Catholic improved to 5-1 in dual meets this season with the win. The team continues its season with a home meet against Randolph-Macon next Saturday, January 19 at 1 p.m.
