Cardinals Fall to Juniata in Landmark Opener

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's tennis team lost a hard fought conference opener to the Eagles of Juniata College 5-4. The team now posts a record of 8-3 for the season.

Senior Liz Harvey and Sophomore Laura Torsiello lost their first position doubles match 8-4 to Juniata's Heather Waring and Rachel Yurchisin. Freshman pair Maria Flores and Sarah MacLean were taken down at third doubles flight 8-3. The second doubles team consisting of Sophomore Eliana Martinez and Freshman Jenna Gietl lost in a tough tiebreaker 9-8 (7-4).

Harvey came back from a set down to win in the third set 4-6,6-1, and 6-4. The remaining three wins came from Torsiello, Martinez, and Geitl. Senior Emma Needham lost her 4th flight singles match 6-3, and 6-4. With the match tied at 4-4 the sixth flight was a tough battle resulting in Flores losing to Tori Gray 7-5, and 6-2. The Lady Cards seek to improve their record in this Sunday's match against Susquehanna.
