WASHINGTON — The Catholic University of America women's tennis team won its Landmark Conference opener at Drew on Saturday, 7-2, but was edged on Sunday at Scranton, 9-0.
The 8-7 cards now hold a 1-1 Landmark record after the first conference bouts of the year.
Senior Sarah MacLean led way for Catholic against Drew as she came back from a 6-1 loss in the first set of the No. 2 singles match to win the next two, both in 6-2 fashion. She also teamed with rookie Colleen McLaughlin to win a back-and-forth No. 2 doubles match, 9-8.
Catholic went on to win two-of-three doubles matches and all but one singles matchup.
The Cards could not keep it going against one the top conference opponents however despite several close matches, including senior No. 1 Jenna Gietl who fell in a third-set bout individually and an 8-6 decision with junior Erin Cole in the top doubles spot.
Catholic now has two days to prep for its final nonconference match of the season as the Cards host Harford on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
