St. Mary's City, Md. - The Catholic University women's tennis team defeated St. Mary's (Md.) 6-3 on the road Saturday.
The Cardinals took a 3-0 lead after doubles action. Senior Erin Cole and freshman Brooke Simonson won the first doubles match 8-6. Sophomore Colleen McLaughlin and junior Lauren Edwards teamed up in the second doubles match to earn an 8-1 victory. Freshman Megan Hughes and freshman Kathleen O'Connell recorded an 8-5 win for the Cards in the third doubles.
Catholic would go on to win three of the six singles matches to clinch the victory. Freshman Tess Geishauser won the third singles match, 6-0, 6-0. While Hughes followed in similar fashion winning, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Olivia Sensenbrenner recorded the sixth win for the Cards.
McLaughlin lost a tough match in the first singles, 0-6, 6-3, 4-6, while Edwards fell in second singles match 3-6, 5-7. Freshman Hannah Clark battled but dropped the match 5-7, 1-6.
"I feel we have a very strong team this year throughout our whole line up, but with three starters unable to play this match, freshmen Tess Geishauser and Megan Hughes stepped up their games and clinched the match at the 4 and 5 spots. This team of 16 players is so deep, I am super excited for our conference season." Said head coach Dana Dowd.
Catholic will return to action on Sunday, October 7 as they welcome York (Pa.).
