WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Catholic University women's track and field team is scheduled to begin their season at the Diplomat Open hosted by Franklin and Marshall on Saturday, December 1.
"Our women look to continue the momentum from a successful cross country season where we placed third," said first-year Director Steve Rahn. "We are talented all across the events with a good amount of depth in some."
The Cardinals were selected to finish in fifth place in the Landmark Conference preseason poll on Friday. They will look to make a statement as they come off of a successful cross country season and return a strong group of women. In the throwing events, All-Region honoree Andrea Galeano returns looking to defend her conference title in the weight throw for the third straight year. As a senior, she will also strive to qualify for NCAA championships for the second time in her career. Other key contributors in the throws include junior Gabby Tomasura, senior Rebecca Johnson, and junior Emily Sullivan.
In the distance/mid-distance events, senior Kiera Lyons who earned All-Region honors in the mile last season will lead a group of young talented runners in sophomores Tara Thornton, and Victoria Carlini as well as freshmen Paige Wilderotter and Hannah Marino. On the sprint side, key contributors will be the school record holder in the 60m dash, junior Grace Boras, as well as sophomore Madeline Baker, junior Madeleine Strokis, and freshman Jillian Walter.
Junior Abby Grabowski will be a key contributor to the team after finishing with the second best time in the conference for the 60m hurdles last season. Sophomore Natalie Troy and freshman Vene Richardson-Powell will also be in the mix at conference championships. Lastly, the Cardinals have added several jumpers this year with freshmen Abigail Walter, junior Olivia Fiore, and freshman Sheila Magrini.
"This team will definitely be in the mix at Landmark Conference Championships in February," said Rahn. "This weekend's meet at Franklin & Marshall College will help get the freshmen acclimated to competing in college and will show the coaching staff a preview of the team's potential this year."
