NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Catholic University women's track and field team placed fourth at the Mason Dixon Conference Meet Sunday afternoon.  The team scored 65 points which tops performances in recent years and was enough to beat conference-rival Mary Washington.  Christopher Newport University won the meet.

On the track, CUA had three runners place in the top six which was good enough for all-conference.  Freshman Remy Ball (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) was second in the 800 with a 2:29.23 while sophomore Jenna Hackett (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) also came in at number two in the 5,000 meters running a 19:10.17.  Mary Shashaty (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) rounded out the individual scoring with a fifth place finish in the mile (5:29.43).   

The Cards also had two all-conference relays.  The distance medley relay took second with a 13:44.10 made up of Courtney Pisano (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Technical), Kelly Szal (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), Ball and Shashaty.  The 4x400 was fourth running a 5:08.91.  Competing were Kelly McErlean (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert), Angela Montanio (North Potomac, Md./Quincy Orchard), Gina Maini (Bayonne, N.J./St. Dominic Academy)and Bridgette Smith (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton).

CUA also had a strong day on the field with seven all-conference performances.  Kim Stengle (Matawan, N.J./Old Bridge) continued to lead the way taking first in the weight throw (13.86m) and third in the shot put (11.17m). Szal also notched two of the honors finishing second in the triple jump with a 9.63m and fourth in the long jump with a 4.55m.  Kennedy was fifth in the long jump (4.44m) and sixth in the high jump making 1.44m.  Kelli McErlean (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) also took fourth in the triple jump soaring to 8.97m.

The Cards' Stengle has automatically qualified for the ECAC Championships March 3-4.  The rest of the squad will wait to see if they also receive a bid and gear up for the outdoor season.
