Cardinals place second behind four first place finishers

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Behind three first place finishes, CUA placed second as a team at the Mason-Dixon Invitational on Saturday.  Keely Eckberg crossed first in the 10,000, Margaret McElroy won the triple jump and Kelly Carioto did the same in the hammer.

Camelia Mayfield, in only her second time running the event, placed second in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:56.24.  In the 800 Laura Kinley crossed in second place with a time of 2:27.65, and in the mile Katie Sacker finished eighth in 5:43.17.

Jessica Breen finished third (20:01.55) and Madeline Holtz fifth (22:07.67) in the 5000, and Eckberg completed her winning race in 42:56.11.

In the field events, Carioto finished first in the hammer (117'1"), second in the discus (91'9"), and fourth in the shot put (35'1"), and McElroy posted a leap of 30'2" in the triple jump to win her respective event.

The Cardinals totaled 72 points as a team and finished second to host Gettysburg, which scored 85 points.  Gwynedd-Mercy was third (66), Bryn Mawr fourth (55) and Messiah fifth with 50 points to round out the top five.

CUA now has two weeks off before action at the 2011 Landmark Conference championships gets underway beginning on April 30 at 9 a.m.
