Cardinals sweep past Blazers 3-0 for 15th win

WASHINGTON – CUA made quick work of Hood on Thursday evening, downing the Blazers in straight sets inside the DuFour Center. The Cardinals won the first game handily, by a 25-10 score, before taking game two 25-20 and game three 25-21.  With the win CUA improves to 15-2, while Hood falls to 6-9.

In game number-one CUA jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on Hood.  The Blazers battled back though, and eventually went on top 5-4.  A 6-1 run by the Cardinals ensued and the home team went back in front 10-6.

The lead then grew to 16-8 and 19-9 in favor of the home team and following a kill by Katie Chefalas CUA found itself ahead 24-10.  The Cardinals scored on the very next play to close out the first game.

CUA went up 3-0 in the second game, and that lead quickly grew to 7-5.  Hood tied things at 7 and then went up 8-7, but the Cardinals scored six of the next seven to go in front 14-9.

Hood called a timeout to try and re-group but that did little to slow the Cardinals, who went up 18-10 soon after the stoppage.  The Blazers didn't go away easily though, and were able to get to within 22-19.  CUA scored three of the next four however, and came away with a five-point win.

Hood scored the first two points of game number-three but CUA answered with two straight to tie things up.  The game remained close in the early going until the Cardinals unleashed an impressive run that blew things open.

Chefalas ran off three straight aces at one point and the Cardinals found themselves up 18-6.  The game was far from over however, as the Blazers battled back and eventually got to within 24-21 before CUA closed things out for its 15th win of the year.

Michaela Carroll handed out 23 assists for the Cardinals, while Kristina Purcell led CUA with 13 digs.  Bridget Kulesh and Chefalas finished with six kills apiece and Claudia Jean totaled five.

CUA gets right back at it on Friday when the Cardinals play a pair of matches at the Worthington Classic, held on the campus of Gallaudet.  Up first for CUA is a contest with Rowan at 2 p.m., while at 8 the Cardinals will take on Keuka.
