CUA begins conference play Sat., Abdelrazek seeks milestone win

WASHINGTON – Riding an 11-match winning streak, CUA heads to the campus of Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa. this weekend for the first of two Landmark Conference round robin weekends.   CUA will play twice on Saturday and once more on Sunday with Head Coach Nagy Abdelrazek searching for his 400th career victory.  He currently has 399 wins.

CUA's 12-1 start is its best since also beginning 12-1 in 2003.  The Cardinals finished that year with a record of 23-11, which at the time was their seventh 20-win season under Abdelrazek.

The Cardinals lone loss this season came vs. Stevenson way back on September 2.  Since that time CUA has been on a roll, winning 11 straight, eight of which came in straight sets.

CUA currently leads the Landmark Conference in hitting percentage (.233) and service aces (2.28/game).  The Cardinals rank second in opponent hitting percentage (.070), assists (10.48/game), kills (12.02/game) and blocks (1.71/game).

Individually, Claudia Jean sits atop the conference leader board in kills (3.36/game) and points (3.9/game), Michaela Carroll ranks second in assists (9.41/game) and third in service aces (0.54/game), Kelly Crimmins is second in blocks (1.10/game) and Kristina Purcell is second in digs (5.72/game).

The Cardinals will face a stiff challenge in their first match of the weekend, taking on a Juniata squad that is 10-4 overall and ranked tenth in this week's AVCA Coaches Poll.  The Eagles are also in the midst of a five-match winning streak.

Merchant Marine Academy enters the weekend at 6-7 overall and Goucher sits at 4-9.

CUA and host Juniata will get things started at 1 p.m. on Saturday, with the Cardinals and Merchant Marine Academy facing off at 6 later that day.  On Sunday, CUA faces Goucher at 10 a.m.

The second weekend of Landmark Conference round robin action will take place October 15-16 on CUA's campus.
