Cardinals sweep Roanoke before falling to FDU-Florham in five

GRANTHAM, Pa. – CUA split its two matches on Saturday on the final day of the Messiah College Tournament.  The Cardinals downed Roanoke 3-0 in the opening match before falling to FDU-Florham 3-2 in the nightcap.  CUA finishes the regular season with a record of 24-8 and now heads into the postseason.

In the day's opening match, CUA swept past Roanoke by scores of 25-15, 25-15 and 25-14. 

Claudia Jean continued her strong play with 16 digs and nine kills, while Katie Chefalas led the Cardinals with 13 kills.  Kelly Crimmins added seven kills, with Isabel Eberstadt totaling 15 digs.

Lucia Irazabal handed out a team-high 26 assists for CUA and Tess O'Leary led the charge with four blocks.

The second match of the day was a back-and-forth affair with CUA taking the first game 25-20, but FDU-Florham battled back to win game two 25-20. 

CUA earned a hard-fought 25-23 victory in game number-three, but FDU came out on top 25-18 in game four.  In the fifth and deciding game CUA fell 15-8.

Irazabal handed out 36 assists this time, while Eberstadt totaled 20 digs and Jean finished with a double-double with 19 digs and 14 kills.

Chefalas again had double-digit kills with 15 to along with 11 digs, while Crimmins finished with six kills.

Following the day's action, Jean was named to the All-Tournament Team.

On Wednesday CUA will host Goucher in the quarterfinals of the Landmark Conference Tournament.  Action from inside the DuFour Center begins at 7 p.m.
