CUA Volleyball Takes Second During Home Invitational

WASHINGTON – Michelle Bouchard and Kathryn Herrington were named to the 15th Annual Guetle Volleyball Invitational All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of Catholic's home event on Sept. 7-8 in the DuFour Center.

The Cardinals opened the home invitational with a five-set 16-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-18, 15-9 win over the Saints of Marymount.

Herrington led the kill category with 14 kills and team-high .500 hitting percentage.  Mariana Cruz commanded the offense with 49 assists, while Bouchard gathered 27 digs.  Herrington also attributed to the defensive parts of the game with four solo blocks and one block assist.  Cruz, Mary Paige Nesfeder and Kelsey Leddy each tallied two service aces.

The mighty red and black notched a total match hitting percentage of .131 on its 57 kills and 23 errors on 131 total attempts.

CUA closed out the day with a three-set 25-9, 25-9, 25-15 sweep of the Dolphins of Mount St. Vincent.

Leddy led the offense with eight kills, with Cruz distributing 24 assists in the second match win of the season.  Cruz also guided the Cardinals in service aces with four, while Elizabeth Levine collected nine digs and Herington totaled three solo blocks and two block assists.

With 31 kills and eight errors on 83 attempts, CUA finished the match with a .277 hitting percentage.

The Cards opened the second day of competition with a three set 25-15, 25-20, 25-18 victory over the Royals of Eastern Mennonite.

Nesfeder and Leddy boasted double-figure kills in the win with 12 and 10 kills, respectively.  Cruz was successful in three categories with 32 of the total 33 assists, a pair of service aces and 16 digs.  Bouchard collected a match-high 18 digs, as Audrey Bizak assisted on five blocks.

Collectively, CUA finished with 36 kills and 11 errors on 111 attempts for .225 hitting percentage.

Catholic concluded the 15th Annual Guetle Volleyball Invitational, CUA suffered a four-set  15-25, 25-21, 22-25, 16-25 loss to the Garnet's of Swarthmore.

Nesfeder notched a match-high 10 kills, while Cruz finished the match with 26 assists.  Leddy contributed two service aces, as Bouchard collected a team-high 31 digs and Bizak assisted on five blocks.

CUA is now 3-5 on the season.
