Catholic Volleyball Competes in Gallaudet Volleyball Worthington Classic

WASHINGTON- The Catholic University volleyball team's four-game winning streak has come to an end.  CUA concluded Gallaudet's two-day Worthington Classic with a record of 1-3.  

The Lady Cards suffered a 3-1 loss to Mary Washington on Friday, Sept. 27.   Mary Paige Nesfeder led the Lady Cards in kills, talling 10 in the four sets. Mariana Cruz provided the team with 26 assists in four sets, while also collecting 16 digs. Michelle Bouchard matched Cruz with 16 digs, as well.

The team later faced Messiah College in their afternoon match. Once again, Nesfeder led the team in kills with 12. Cruz continued to lead in assists, providing 21 in the three sets. Bouchard provided 27 digs, with Cruz collecting 15 digs and Kelsey Leddy finishing with 10 digs. The Cardinals lost to Messiah 3-0.

CUA returned to Gallaudet to take on Whittier on Saturday, Sept. 28. Mariana Cruz led the team in with 14 assists, while also providing 10 digs in the three sets of play.  Nesfeder led the team with 10 kills and two solo blocks. Bridget Kulesh and Kathryn Herrington also provided the team with two solo blocks each in the three sets. Bouchard had a total of 18 digs in the match. The Lady Cards suffered their third loss in a row, falling to Whittier 3-0.

The CUA volleyball team saw their final match against North Park as their chance to get a final win before the end of the tournament. Cruz, once again, led the team with 26 assists, giving her a total of 87 in for the tournament. Michelle Bouchard capped off with 25 digs, giving her a total of 86. Nesfeder, Cruz, and Leddy also attributed to the team's total of 100 digs in their fourth match of the tournament. Leddy also provided the Lady Cards with three service aces. Audrey Bizak led the team with six solo blocks, with Herrington close behind with three. The Cardinals were able to pull out a 3-1 win over North Park, ending the tournament 1-3.

"It was a very good tournament," says CUA volleyball coach Nagy Abdelrazek. "It was a great competition and a great experience for our young team. We made many improvements, and this was a good challenge to get us ready for our conference tournament."

When asked about the North Park win, Abdelrazek explained how it was the team's last chance to make a statement. "We wanted to finish on a high note," he says, "and get our confidence back through a solid win."
