Volleyball Season Wrap-Up

WASHINGTON – The Catholic University volleyball team wrapped up the 2013 season with their fifth consecutive 20+ win season, the squad's fourth Landmark Conference Tournament semi-final appearance and had three Cardinal student-athletes named All-Landmark Second Team.

With a final overall record of 23-15 and 3-2 in the Landmark Conference, CUA opened the season with a slow start recording a 0-5 amrk before the 15th Annual Guetle Invitational.  With home court advantage, the Cardinals snapped the streak with a four-set win over Widener, a victorious five-set battle over Marymount (Va.) and three-set sweep of Mount Saint Vincent.

In between tournaments, CUA participated in two tri-match events and one single-game contest for a record of 4-1.  Catholic concluded the month of September with 7th Annual Worthington Classic at Gallaudet University.

The first Landmark Conference weekend took place at Susquehanna with Catholic defeating Goucher in four sets and Scranton in three sets, while falling to Juniata in three.

CUA welcomed Elizabethtown, who will join the Landmark Conference next season, for the official home opener.  The Cardinals won the battle of the birds, conquering the Blue Jays 3-0.  Before the second Landmark Weekend, Catholic went 3-2 at the Knights Fall Classic at Neumann and dropped a single-game match at Washington College.

Due to the government shutdown, Catholic served as the host site for the second Landmark Conference weekend welcoming all conference opponents, except Merchant Marine.  Catholic split the event with a 3-1 loss to Susquehanna and 3-0 win over Moravian.

Catholic concluded the month of October with a 3-1 record and had a successful farewell to seniors Bridget Kulesh and Mariana Cruz during a 3-0 sweep of Hood for senior night

The Cardinals cruised to a five-game winning streak, which included CUA's Landmark Conference quarterfinal win over Goucher in the DuFour Center.  Susquehanna, who defeated Catholic earlier in the year, ended the mighty red and black's season with a 3-0 loss during the semi-final game of the conference tournament.

Landmark Honors…

Kulesh and Kimberly Lorditch were named to the Landmark Conference Fall Honor Roll on Tuesday, Nov. 19, while Katheryn Herrington was named to the Landmark All-Sportsmanship Team.

Mary Paige Nesfeder was the only student-athlete to receive a Player of the Week Honor (September 23).

Catholic finishes the season 3-2 in the conference and No. 3 in the standings.

As a unit, CUA tops the Landmark blocking statistics with 312 total blocks and an average 2.37 per set.  Thanks the efforts of libero Michelle Bouchard, the Cards are No. 1 in digs with 2440 this season and 18.48 per set.

Individually, Herrington led the conference in blocks with 146 total and 82 solo blocks.  Audrey Bizak was second on the conference blocking list with 55 solo blocks and a total 124.  Bouchard was first with 689 digs total and an average 5.56 per set.

Tournament Trophies…

At the conclusion of the 15th Annual Guelte Invitational, Michelle Bouchard and Kathryn Herrington were named to the All-Tournament team.

Nesfeder was named All-Tournament for her performance during the 7th Annual Worthington Classic.

Bouchard and Kalen Backe rounded out the New Jersey City University Tournament with All-Tournament honors and Bouchard was also named MVP.

The Cardinals will return 12 student-athletes for the 2014 season.  Rising sophomore Herrington notched a season-high 14 kills against Marymount (Va.) and tallied nine blocks on two occasions.  Fellow classmate Mary Paige Nesfeder recorded a season-high 22 kills against Washington College, a season-best 24 digs in a four-set loss to Widener and amassed six service aces in two separate matches.  Defensive phenomenon Michelle Bouchard had an outstanding digging effort in CUA's 3-2 win over Penn St.-Behrend with a season-high 36 digs.
