WASHINGTON – The Catholic University of America women's volleyball team advanced to 11-1 after collecting four wins from the Lycoming Invitational in Williamsport, Pa. Freshman right-side hitter Maria Juelle earned her second all-tournament team accolade on the weekend.
The two-day tournament began on Friday, September 12 with the Cardinals defeating the tournament host Lycoming in three sets (25-21, 25-16, 25-18) and Elmira in three (27-25, 25-20, 25-23). By the end of day two, Catholic beat Houghton 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-18) and picked up the team's first five-set win by defeating Pitt- Bradford (21-25, 25-19, 25-12, 19-25, 15-10).
Juelle provided three double-figure hitting finishes for CUA, tallying 13 kills against Lycoming, Houghton and Pitt.-Bradford, and an unblemished finish with 13 kills without a single error on 19 attempts against Lycoming.
Mary Paige Nesfeder notched two double-figure outings with a weekend high 16 kills against Pitt. –Bradford and 14 kills in the win over Houghton. Brynn Cooley added to the offense with 15 kills during the Houghton match and 12 at the end of the Pitt.-Bradford game.
Michelle Seals distributed 140 assists on the weekend and a contest-high 45 assists during Saturday's opening match. In the Cardinals five-set battle with Pitt, Seals recorded team-high six service aces, while gathering 14 digs against Lycoming.
Michelle Bouchard was pivotal on defense collecting 62 digs and team-best with 27 in the Houghton victory. Cooley and Juelle added to the defensive endeavor in the Houghton win with 19 digs and 11 digs, respectively. In terms of front row defensive, Juelle and Bizak were equally effective at the net, as they both finished with eight block assists at the end of the tournament.
The Cardinals return to the DuFour Athletic Center for two consecutive home matches, welcoming Notre Dame on Tuesday, September 16 and McDaniel on Wednesday, September 17 both matches are slated for 7:00 p.m. Tuesday's match serves as CUA's home opener.
