Cardinals Post Two Wins to Open Season at Route 42 Classic

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Led by 2017 All-Landmark Conference Second Team selection, sophomore Patricia Martinez, the Catholic University women's volleyball team opened the 2018 season with back-to-back wins over Mary Baldwin and Lynchburg on Friday at Eastern Mennonite's Yoder Arena in the Route 42 Classic.

The Cardinals (2-0) opened their season with at least two-straight wins at Eastern Mennonite for the fifth consecutive year. Since 2014, the team is 16-2 at the Royals' opening season tournament. The team swept Mary Baldwin 25-13, 25-12, 25-18 before downing Lynchburg 25-21, 22-25, 25-10, 25-23.

Martinez totaled 17 kills and 19 digs in six sets on Friday, including her first double double of the season and the 13th of her career with 12 kills and 12 digs against Lynchburg (0-2).

In making her first career start, freshman McKenzie Collier totaled seven kills and 12 digs against the Hornets, both career highs, while freshman Juliana Michniak had nine kills, also a career high.
