Cooper, Cardinals Sweep Pitt-Greensburg to Open Guetle

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University women's volleyball junior Isabella Cooper totaled a career-high 13 kills as the Cardinals opened the 20th annual Guetle Invitational with a 25-10, 25-18, 25-5 victory over Pitt-Greensburg Friday night on Franny Murray Court.

Catholic (5-1) has now won 13 of its last 20 games at home and is 8-1 in the Guetle Invitational during that time.

Cooper, who had 11 kills in Wednesday's match versus Gettysburg at home, also added four digs and two block assists while posting a .750 hitting percentage. Freshman Juliana Michniak had seven kills and five digs while sophomore Maria Gonzalez and freshman Caroline Kelly each had a team-high six digs.

Michniak totaled all seven of her kills in the first set while hitting .778 and adding three digs. The Cardinals jumped out to a 6-1 lead before a 12-4 run pushed their advantage to 18-5 after back-to-back kills by sophomore Kate Murphy. She then sealed the set with a service ace.

Catholic held a 10-8 lead in the second set following a kill by sophomore Joya Libbus before an 8-2 run, highlighted by four kills from Cooper, extended that margin to eight, 18-10. The Bobcats (0-6) pulled within four at 19-15, but that would be as close as they would get as the Cardinals used a 4-0 run to take a 23-15 lead before a kill by sophomore Patricia Martinez gave Catholic a two sets to none lead.

The third set was all Cardinals as they scored the first 19-straight points all behind the serve of Gonzalez. Cooper added six more kills in the third set while Gonzales totaled eight assists and six service aces. Junior Nina Kasputis also had three kills.

The 20th annual Guetle Invitational continues on Saturday with Catholic taking on Chatham at 10 a.m., and Salisbury at 2 p.m.
