WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University women's volleyball freshman Juliana Michniak totaled 10 kills while junior Isabelle Cooper had nine kills and seven digs as the Cardinals won their third match out of five at home this season with a sweep of Washington College in a nonconference contest Wednesday night on Franny Murray Court.
Catholic (7-2) has started the season with seven wins in its first nine matches for the third-straight year.
Michniak has at least 10 kills for the second time in the last three matches as she totaled a career-high 15 in a 3-1 win over Chatham on Saturday. Meanwhile, Cooper and sophomore Patricia Martinez each had nine kills as the trio of Michniak, Cooper and Martinez combined for 28 of the team's 39 kills to go along with 16 digs.
Martinez totaled six of her nine kills in the first set while Michniak and Cooper added four each. With the set tied at 20-20, a kill by Martinez and back-to-back spikes from Michniak put the Cardinals ahead, 23-20. The Shorewomen (4-6) pulled within one, but two-straight errors sealed the win for the home team.
The second set featured seven ties and two lead changes. Tied at 14-14, Catholic used a 6-0 run, highlighted by a kill from Michniak and a service ace from Cooper, to take a commanding 20-14 advantage. Once again, Washington rallied, pulling within 24-22, but for the second consecutive set, the Cardinals earned the victory on a Shorewomen ball handling error.
Washington jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third set, but couldn't extend it past three as Catholic rallied to tie it at 11-11. Leading by one, the Cardinals used a 5-1 spurt to take a 23-18 advantage before a kill by Martinez and another error by the Shorewomen sealed the win for Catholic.
After totaling a career-high 22 digs versus Chatham on Saturday, freshman Mackenzie Collier added another 16 on Wednesday to go along with five kills and four assists. Sophomore Maria Gonzalez totaled 31 assists, 10 digs and three kills while freshman Caroline Kelly had 13 digs.
Abby Smith led the Shorewomen with 10 kills and 15 digs while Cassie Kowalski added 10 kills and 11 digs.
Catholic heads to Aston, Pennsylvania this weekend for the Knights Invitational hosted by Neumann. The Cardinals face host Neuman and Salisbury on Friday before taking on Widener and Haverford on Saturday.
