Cooper Leads Cards to Second-Straight Win at Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University volleyball senior Isabelle Cooper totaled 12 kills, eight digs and six total blocks to lead the Cardinals to a 23-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-13 victory over Gallaudet Wednesday at the Field House.

Catholic (13-8) posted their second-straight win against its crosstown rival after sweeping the Bison on Saturday, 25-16, 25-18, 25-23. The Cards have won four consecutive in the series, including three in-a-row at the Field House.

Cooper totaled 10 or more kills for the eight time this season while tying her season high in blocks. She also had six blocks in a sweep of Shenandoah at home on Sept. 25.

Cooper, junior Patricia Martinez and freshman Josephine Morrill combined for 42 of the team's 51 kills as Martinez had 12 and Morrill had 18, one short of her career high. The trio also combined for a .259 hitting percentage.

The first set featured seven ties with the last coming at 20-20 before Gallaudet (4-17) scored three of the next four points and won the set on a kill by Karita Lewis.

Catholic jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the second set before the Bison tied it at 12-12. With the set tied at 19-19, the Cards scored four-straight points on two kills from Morrill and two from junior Joya Libbus. The Cardinals tied the match at 1-1 on back-to-back kills by Morrill and Martinez.

Catholic scored nine of the first 11 points in the third en route to a comfortable nine-point win behind six kills from Morrill.

The Cardinals scored the first six points of the decisive fourth set and never trailed. Gallaudet got as close as 14-10 before the Cards scored 11 of the final 14 points to seal their fifth win in the last seven matches.

Martinez added 22 digs, four short of her career high, as she eclipsed 20 for the fifth time in her career. It was also her eighth double double of the season and fourth in the last five matches.

Junior Christina Ciola finished with a season-high 21 digs, her most since she had 22 in a five-set loss versus Moravian on Oct. 28, 2017. It was her ninth career match with at least 20 digs after missing last season to injury.

Junior Maria Gonzalez totaled 35 assists and a career-high 20 digs while Libbus finished with seven kills and three total blocks.

Catholic opens Landmark Conference play on Saturday with a tri-match at Scranton against the Royals and Juniata beginning at noon.
