Volleyball upset in CAC championship

Senior setter Katie Korreck's 54 assists and 19 digs led the Salisbury State volleyball team to a 15-10, 6-15, 15-8, 15-7 upset victory against No. 20 Catholic University in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament championship game at DuFour Center on Nov. 4.

The win gives the Sea Gulls (18-17) the CAC's automatic bid to the 48-team NCAA Tournament and will be their second appearance in the NCAA playoffs in three years. Catholic (35-6), ranked second in the Mid-Atlantic Region entering the week, were not selected to the NCAA tournament Field of 48.

Senior outside hitter Donna Hudson led the SSU offense with 24 kills. Freshman middle hitter Kim Sheedy added 14 and junior outside hitter Kara Kowalski 13. Sophomore middle hitter Jessica Freeman had three service aces.

The Sea Gulls, who lost twice to the Cardinals in the regular season, opened an 11-5 lead in Game 4 en route to the title.

Junior outside hitter Mary Ellen Ryan led the Cardinals with 19 kills and 13 digs, and freshman outside hitter Anji Wall had 14 kills. Junior middle hitter Kelly Kings and sophomore setter Bridget Guetle registered 10 digs each.
