CUA finishes the day 1-2


WASHINGTON - The Catholic University volleyball team (5-7) hosted its annual Guetle Invitational Saturday at the DuFour Center.  CUA went 1-2 on the day while the University of Mary Washington won the event.  Sophomore Carey Anne Nassib (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and freshman Mary Kate Gardner (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep) were both voted to the all-tournament team for their outstanding performance throughout the day.

The Cards handily won the first game over the Trinity College Tigers (0-6).  CUA was victorious in three games 30-17, 30-22, 30-17.  Sophomore newcomer to the team Lynn Brown (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had a team-high seven kills for the match while Ashleah Kuriger (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) posted six.  Freshman Katie Norberg(Grasonville, Md./St. Mary's) had 15 assists in her nod to the starting lineup.  Trinity setter Ashleigh Wesche was named the tournament MVP.

In the second game of the day, CUA faced old-Capital Athletic Conference foe Mary Washington (7-5).  The Cards dropped the match in three games 30-26, 30-21 and 30-20.  Gardner was the leading hitter for the Cardinals with 15 kills.  Nassib was second with 10 kills, an ace and a solo block.  Emily McGlynn (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) moved back into her starting role at setter with 23 assists.

The final match of the day decided the tourney runner-up as both CUA and Messiah (9-4) came in with a 1-1 record for the day.  The Cards won the first game 30-23 but dropped the next three by disappointing scores of 30-22, 30-22, 30-24.  Nassib was the powerhouse for the Cards in the third match with 17 kills, nine digs and a service ace.  Gardner posted 11 kills for the match.  McGlynn was at her best with 43 assists against the Falcons.

CUA will only have a day off before facing Hood College in its first home duel of 2007.  The game is schedule for Monday at the DuFour Center, it will begin at 7 p.m.
