Two wins for CUA on day one of Messiah Tournament

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The CUA volleyball team had a strong showing on Friday in its first day of action at the Messiah Tournament as the Cardinals swept matches from the host Falcons as well as Misericordia.  Following the wins CUA sits at 17-13 on the season.

In the opening match vs. Messiah, CUA earned set wins of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-20.  Messiah jumped out to a 7-5 lead early in the first game, but the Cardinals roared back to take a 13-10 lead.

The teams continued to trade points with CUA clinging to a 17-15 lead following two straight points by the Falcons.  With the Cardinals ahead 23-19, Messiah scored to pull within three, but CUA scored the next two points to earn a 25-20 win.

In set number two CUA jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the early going.  Messiah battled back to make things interesting at 10-8, and soon after the set was tied at 15.  After the teams traded points, CUA surged in front 21-18, but the Falcons battled back once again and closed to within 22-21.  CUA scored three of the next five points however and came away with a 25-23 win.

CUA ran off 13 of the first 17 points in the third set, only to see Messiah battle back to pull within 17-16.  The Cardinals kept their composure though and eventually held on for the 25-20 win.

Leading the way for CUA was Claudia Jean with 19 digs and 13 kills, while Kristina Purcell added 20 digs.  Katie Chefalas registered eight kills and nine digs and Michaela Carroll led the Cardinals with 29 assists. 

Against Misericordia, CUA was again locked in three tight sets, taking the first 25-20, the second 25-23 and the third 25-19. 

Carroll handed out 44 assists and 17 digs in the win, while Jean registered a team-best 20 kills to go along with 12 digs.  Purcell added 27 digs for the Cardinals and Chefalas again had a solid match with 14 kills and three digs.

Kristin Hoffman was Misericordia’s leader in kills with nine, while Nicole Korgeski and Callin McCullion both totaled 12 digs.

The Cardinals close out action at the Messiah Tournament on Saturday with a pair of matches.  First up, CUA takes on Penn State-Berks at 12:30, while in the nightcap, the Cardinals will go up against Scranton beginning at 2:30.
