WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic field hockey team officially opened its 2018 season on Monday, August 20 with its first day of practice at Cardinal Stadium. The team began the day with a morning conditioning test and scrimmage followed by a second practice in the afternoon.
"I am pleased with the work we have done so far," said third-year head coach Heidi Lewis who was named 2017 Landmark Conference Coach of the Year. "We are spending a significant amount of time this preseason talking about our goals, values and standards and the team jumped into these conversations right away. As soon as we started on the turf, it was great to see the speed and enthusiasm that everyone brought."
Excitement is high coming off a successful season a year ago in which Catholic won the Landmark Conference regular season championship, earning the top seed in the 2017 Landmark Conference Field Hockey Championship. The Cardinals finished 15-3 overall and a perfect 7-0 in conference. They return All-Landmark Conference First Team selection, senior Lane Adams, and All-Landmark Conference Second Team honorees, junior Katie Anderson and sophomore Kelly Cancelmo.
"We have a large incoming class and I'm really pleased to see how quickly they integrated with our returners," said Lewis. "We are playing together as a team from day one and it is great to see. There is a ton of potential in this team and I am excited to see how they keep learning and developing."
Catholic has just 12 days left before its season opener at No. 3 TCNJ on Saturday, Sept. 1. The team opens Landmark Conference play at home on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Scranton.
