WASHINGTON, D.C. - The 2019 season marks the 50th anniversary for the Catholic University field hockey team since its inaugural season in 1969. The team will officially celebrate on Saturday, Sept. 21 when the Cardinals host No. 4 Messiah beginning at 1 p.m.
The event will incorporate a game and reception from 1 p.m., to 5 p.m., at Cardinal Stadium to celebrate 50 years of varsity field hockey at Catholic University. The Division of University Advancement is asking all field hockey alumni to register for this free event here. In addition to registering, alumni can also see what other alumni and former teammates who will be in attendance.
Messiah, who was ranked at No. 4 in the NFHCA preseason poll, finished with a 20-1 record last year and were ranked at No. 1 in the final NFHCA poll after advancing to the national quarterfials.
Catholic, who was ranked as high as No. 17 in the NFHCA Division III Coaches Poll a year ago, have won at least 10 games in 14 of the last 15 seasons. The team returns 20 players, including nine starters from last year's team that went 8-9 overall and a perfect 7-0 in the Landmark Conference. Five of the team's nine losses came against teams ranked in the NFHCA poll.
Since 1969, the Cardinals have won 386 games, made five NCAA Tournament appearances and won four conference championships.
Catholic opens the season at home on Saturday, Aug. 31 against No. 6 TCNJ. The Lions went 16-5 a year ago and was ranked at No. 7 in the final NFHCA poll after advancing to the national quarterfinals, losing to eventual national champion Middlebury.
