WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's lacrosse team claimed their first Landmark Conference win of the season with 17 different goal scorers on Saturday against the visiting Elizabethtown Blue Jays.
The Cardinals dominated all areas of the field, totaling 33 shots and winning 19 out of 26 draw controls. The team capitalized on four out of six free position opportunities on offense, and the defense held Elizabethtown to only seven shots.
Starting goalie senior Tricia Pehnke (West Windsor, N.J. / West Windsor Plainsboro North) made four saves on the day. Junior goalie Brittnee Frizol (Kings Park, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) entered the game towards the end of the second half, closing out the Cardinals win.
The Cardinals jumped to an early lead in the first half, reducing the game to a running clock just under halfway through the first. Senior attack Nicole Laitner (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) scored back-to-back goals in the first ten minutes of play, one of which came off a free position shot. Sophomore middie Anna Stumme (Millersville, Md. / Seton Keough) scored with an assist from fellow sophomore Laura Dunn (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson). Dunn later scored in the first half with an assist from senior defender Caroline DiBartolomeo (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill East).
DiBartolomeo added one to the board with a goal off a free position opportunity. Senior Maddie Wilson (Pearl River, N.Y. / Pearl River) scored with an assist from Stumme. Fellow senior Lindsay Brophy (Haddonfield, N.J. / Haddonfield Memorial) totaled one goal, along with sophomores Jenna Van Middelem (Mt. Sinai, N.Y. / Mount Sinai) and Ana Brandenburg (Edgewater, Md. / Annapolis).
Sophomore midfielder Alexis Bosilovic (Gibsonia, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) scored two on the day off two free position shots. Freshman attack Nicolette Crisalli (Silver Spring, Md. / St. John's College) also scored twice, with assists from sophomore Clair Schmitzer (Sparta, N.J. / Sparta) and Wilson. The score read 15-1 at halftime. Sophomore attack Emily Merkel (Dallas, Texas / Ursuline Academy) scored back-to-back unassisted goals from the end of the first half and start of the second.
The Cardinals finished strong on offense as many players saw time against the visiting Blue Jays. Sophomores Erin Macchione (East Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Melville), Elizabeth McCooey (Rye, N.Y. / School of the Holy Child), and Allie Bond (Montclair, N.J. / Monclair Kimberley Academy) each notched a goal in the final ten minutes of the game. Freshman Sarah Washington (Davidsonville, Md. / Annapolis), Ali Cusack (Ipswich, Mass. / Governors Academy), and Marisa Opalinski (Arlington, Mass. / Arlington Catholic) scored to close out the Cardinal win in the second half.
The final score read a whopping 21-3 win for the Cardinals, their largest blowout of the season thus far. Now holding a 5-1 record, Catholic will host St. Mary's (Md.) on Tuesday, March 24, for a 6:00 p.m. game.
