WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University women's soccer team picked up a home victory Wednesday evening against the St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks in a 2-0 win at Carlini Field.
Catholic found the back of the net early to take control of the contest. Senior defender Daniella Montesano crossed the ball into the box and it was cleared by a St. Mary's header only as far as Sharkey near the top of the box. On the volley, Sharkey knocked the ball with her right foot and it snuck in the right side of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals doubled their lead later in the first half thanks to an impressive run by junior midfielder Krista Boretti. Boretti beat a defender off the dribble on the right wing and charged into the box with the ball. Her close-range effort on goal was deflected in front of the net where Gorman finished the job and scored the team's second goal.
The Cardinals outshot their opponents 15-6 in the contest and did not surrender a corner kick.
Junior goalkeeper Nina Fernandez made three saves against the Seahawks to preserve the lead and earn her third clean sheet of the season.
The Cardinals begin Landmark Conference play this Saturday, September 28. Catholic travels to conference foe Scranton for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
