WASHINGTON – For the second year in a row, The Catholic University of America women's volleyball team concluded its annual Guetle Invitational with a record of 3-1, while newcomer Maria Juelle was named to the All-Tournament Team.
This year's tournament featured Cabrini, Marywood, Marymount, New Jersey City, Randolph and the CUA Cardinals.
Catholic opened the two-day event with a four-set (23-25, 25-12, 25-10, 25-16) win over NJCU. After suffering a weekend-low .000 hitting percentage in game one. CUA gained its composure to hit above .600 in set two with 11 kills and two errors on 15 attempts for a day high.
Mary Paige Nesfeder led the match with 12 kills and four errors with 28 attempts, followed by Juelle's eight kills and two errors on 13 attempts and six service aces off her fast paced top-spin-jump serve. Michelle Seals distributed 32 assist, as Michelle Bouchard tallied 18 digs.
Catholic took the second match in three sets, defeating Randolph 26-24, 25-22, 25-22.
Nesfeder once again dominated from the left side of the net, as Juelle added to the offense from the right side. Nesfeder tallied eight kills in additions to Juelle's seven kills. Kathryn Herrington finished above .500 with four kills on five attempts without a single error (.600). Seals tallied 22 assists alongside Juelle's career high 10 aces and two solo blocks.
CUA opened the second day of competition with another three-set win, this time taking down Marywood (25-11, 25-13, 25-19).
Brynn Cooley made her mark on the offense with 12 kills on 28 attempts with no errors (.429), alongside Nesfeder's 11 kills and five errors on 29 attempts. Seals circulated 20 assists, as Bouchard gathered 11 digs. Amy O'Connor tallied four solo blocks.
The Cardinals toughest match of the tournament was against Cabrini, who defeated CUA in three sets (25-15, 25-16, 26-24). Catholic trailed Cabrini in sets one and two, and suffered an upsetting third set loss despite leading most of the match.
Herrington finished with eight kills, while Cooley registered six kills and Seals tallied 22 assists. Three Cardinals recorded double-figure digging numbers, Seals marked a double-double with 11 assists, Nesfeder notched a team-high 12 digs and Bouchard collected 10 digs.
Catholic continues the season with the Lycoming Invitational in Williamsport, Pa.
